I love holiday traditions. Each year we do things like decorate the Christmas tree together, allow the kids to pick out Christmas ornaments at Hallmark, and even visit light displays together. I feel that the time we spend together is more import than the gifts we buy. That’s why when I found out about the new Christmas tradition of the Roaming Reindeer I was excited to try it with my family.
The Roaming Reindeer, by Angela Meju tells a story of two of Santa’s reindeer, Sam and Gus, who set out to help Santa complete his naughty and nice list. The only problem is that there isn’t enough time to visit all the children, so they must enlist the help of their friends.
The reindeer are sent off in pairs of two and are assigned a home to visit. Reindeer 1 is in charge of going back to Santa to report naughty behavior, while Reindeer 2 stays to keep watch.
This book comes in a keepsake box which includes two plush reindeer. Parents can use the reindeer’s magic to “move them around” When the children have been misbehaving Reindeer 1 will disappear so it is the children’s goal to keep them together until Christmas Eve when they both fly back to Santa.
I read the book to E the other night and he loved it. It is great in that it is not too long or have too many words so even someone as young as E can still enjoy it without losing interest. In fact, after reading the book, E said to me “That was a good story, Mommy.”
I can’t wait to come up with creative places for the reindeer to keep watch over the kids this holiday season. I have even had N volunteer to help find lookout places! It is a wonderful way to get both the older son and the younger ones involved.
