Maybe I missed it in all my years of going to church, but I’m pretty sure that there is nothing in the Bible about a large, creepy rabbit hoping around delivering candy and filling baskets with plastic eggs. You know, all to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Or not.
In this increasing commercialization of the holidays I am working to keep the real meaning of the holidays in perspective. We don’t go overboard with gifts and I try to keep reminding the kids of the REAL reason we are celebrating those holidays. It isn’t about how much candy you eat or how many gifts you get, but about Christ’s sacrifice for us.
So as we approach Easter, keep in mind what your focus is on. The real meaning of Easter is the promise of a new beginning because of Christ’s sacrifice for us. No matter how long the winter is, spring always comes. No matter how long or dark your night may be, dawn always breaks. And no matter how lost, hurting or broken your life may be, there is always hope of new beginning.
It is my job as a mother to teach E as he grows up what is fact and what is fiction. It is my responsibility to teach him the difference between the Christian Easter and the secular Easter. I don’t want to cut out the chocolate and egg hunts for E, but I don’t want him to be confused about the REASON that we celebrate the holiday.
