We got our dog, Pooka, when I was finishing up my sophomore year of college. She was the first dog my family had had in 13 years. Our previous dog, Dusty, had died when I was only 7. I was so excited about this opportunity to finally own a dog again.
From the moment that we brought her home, I knew that she was going to be my buddy. She was small enough to fit in one of my shoes but had a big personality. She was cuddly and affectionate, yet knew what she wanted (maybe like me?). Pooka stole more than one stuffed animal from my bed and claimed it as her own.
She and I worked together to learn basic obedience, house training, and some simple tricks. She would sleep in my room (and often in bed with me) while I was home from school. She even loved my three cats! She was there when my fiancé and I broke up, and when I met and later married my husband. Now she also puts up with my two crazy boys! She’s been there to cuddle during these cold Pennsylvania winters or even just a companion to watch TV with.
I can’t believe that 11 years have passed. Pooka is now 11 and fluent into her senior years. This makes me emotional because I know that the years I have left with her are limited. What’s why I want to make sure that I make her remaining years as great as possible.
I know that time has, and will continue, to take its toll on her muscles and joints but that doesn’t mean that I can’t take steps to keep her mind as sharp as possible. She is such a major part of my life which is why I decided to try Pooka on the new Purina ProPlan BRIGHT MIND dog food.
A dog is considered to be a senior at age seven. It is also around this time, according to the experts at Purina ProPlan, that the glucose metabolism in a dog’s brain begins to change. These changes can eventually effect the dog’s memory, learning, awareness, and even decision making. In an effort to help promote alertness and mental sharpness, Purina ProPlan formulated Bright Mind for those senior dogs.
Since Pooka falls firmly in that senior dog category, I figured that if Bright Mind can enhance her interest in play as well as her ability to adapt and cope with change. I was excited to see if these botanical oils, which are part of Bright Mind, really worked.
I headed to our local PetSmart to purchase the Purina ProPlan Bright Mind dog food in order to test with Pooka. Unfortunately, Pooka wasn’t able to go to the store too since because of going into anaphylaxis after having some of her puppy shots, she is not fully vaccinated.
We began by slowly mixing in more and more of the Bright Mind dog food, eventually completely replacing her old dog food. We committed to trying the new food for at least 30 days. According to Purina ProPlan, Bright Mind will produce visible results within that time. I am really hoping that Bright Minds will make Pooka more alert and more willing to play like she used to when she was younger. As much as I love cuddling with her, I know that it is also a sign of slowing down and that just makes me sad.
I can’t wait to see what the results will be after the 30 day experiment. I also can’t wait to tell you what happened!
Comment On: What are some of the special moments that you have shared with your dog?
Wow, Pooka really sounds like a true member of the family! We have two older pups who have been with us for years and moved across state lines more than they can count. I’m eager to hear more about Pooka’s switch to the new food! #client
