During this holiday season we often focus on getting holiday shopping done, finding great deals, and cooking holiday meals. In all of this hustle and bustle we often forget about those who might be less fortunate. There are children that instead of wishing for TVs, video games, and iPods, just wish to live a normal life and to look like other children.
Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft. One in 10 of those children will die before their first birthday. The children who survive are often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places, they are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a productive life.
Since 1982, Operation Smile has provided more than 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults with facial deformities. This volunteer-based medical charity trains local doctors in developing and strengthen healthcare systems so more children in some of the poorest areas in the world can be treated. Operation Smile operates in over 60 countries to heal children’s smiles and bring hope for a better future.
Campus Book Rentals strongly believes in the mission of Operation Smile, which is why they have named Operation Smile as the recipient of Campus Book Rentals Making a Difference program. As a part of this program, Campus Book Rentals has committed to donate a minimum of 80 additional surgeries between June 2013 and June 2014.
