K9 Advantix II

Even though it is still March, pretty soon spring will be here and that means flea and tick season! As a pet owner, our dog getting fleas is one of my worst nightmares. One of the first lines of defense in protecting your pet from fleas is to invest in a topical flea treatment. This is where products like K9 Advantix II are so important.

K9 Advantix II is a leading brand of pet medication that helps combat fleas and ticks on dogs. Conventional parasiticides just kill fleas and ticks only after they get to the dog’s skin and have the chance to have their blood meal. K9 Advantix II works in a different way. It repels the most relevant ticks, sand flies, stable flies, and mosquitoes before they have the chance to bite, and it effectively kills ticks and fleas.

Sometimes though, you don’t get the treatment on in time and your pet gets fleas.

A couple of years ago, our dog somehow got fleas. At the time, I was four months pregnant. I didn’t want to use any harsh chemicals or flea bomb the house for fear of exposing the baby to the chemicals.

Thankfully, there is a way to rid your house of fleas naturally. You may have heard of a product called diatomaceous earth. This product is often used on farms to mix with animal feed in order to keep bugs out of it. It is also a miracle solution for pet owners dealing with fleas.

The idea is that when diatomaceous earth, an off-white, talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton, is sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas) it compromises their waxy coating so that it dries them out from the inside out.

You want to find food-grade diatomaceous earth (there is a kind for swimming pool filters that you DON’T want) and you sprinkle it on your carpet, under couches, behind bookcases, and anywhere else that fleas count hide. Rub it into the carpet and let it sit for a day or two. It is also important to remember that the diatomaceous earth can’t get wet. If it gets wet then it pretty much becomes ineffective. After a couple of days vacuum up what is the in the main areas of the room, but leave it under the couches and other furniture.

I also wanted to note that you can actually rub the diatomaceous earth right into your pet’s fur. The only concern is that you want to try to avoid breathing the diatomaceous earth dust in. I recommend using one of the respirator masks, otherwise the dust could irritate your lungs.

With spring on the way, prepare your flea defense early. Start by applying K9 Advantix II, and if for some reason some fleas do end up sneaking into your house, follow up by using a diatomaceous earth treatment.

K9 Advantix II is available in four different variations (>10lbs, 11-20lbs, 21-55lbs, or 55lbs+) depending on the size of your dog and is available at your local pet store or an Amazon.com.

  1. Hi,

Excellent observation. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is great in breaking the fleas’ skin and absorbing their moisture and thus killing them.

It is a good year round remedy for controlling fleas, particularly if sprinkled in the pet houses.

    Thank you
