Here in Pennsylvania there is one thing that we can always count on each winter, and that’s a lot of snow days! During these days it can be difficult to come up with activities to do with the boys. Since we can’t go outside, I decided to create this glow in the dark rice instead.
We have played in rice tables before, but those were usually the kinds with plain, white rice. I decided to get a little creative with our rice table. In addition to a sense of touch, I added the element of sight to our table by making the rice glow in the dark.
There are a few things you will need ahead of time, including:
- Rice
- Gallon freezer bags
- Fluorescent paint
- Rubbing alcohol
We purchased the rice in bulk from our local club store in a 10 pound bag. It doesn’t really matter what brand of rice it is as long as it is white, so just choose the most inexpensive brand.
You will want to fill the gallon freezer bags approximately 2/3 of the way with the rice. Then squeeze in a generous amount of fluorescent paint into the bag with the rice. After putting in the paint, you will also want to add 2 to 3 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol.
Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal it closed. You will then knead the rice until it all has been evenly cover in the paint. After that rice has been covered, open the bag and allow the rice to dry overnight.
You will want to repeat this process for each color you choose to use.
I purchased one of those flatter storage boxes to store the rice in. I chose the kind with latching handles so that the lid didn’t accidentally come off.
I then poured the rice into the container.
Now all you need is to turn on a blacklight which will get the rice glowing. Throw in some brightly colored containers, sand tools, and toys and you are ready to spend hours playing!
