Does your little one have a day off of school? When it’s too wet or cold to go outside, it’s often a good idea to have some activities on hand to help keep the kids occupied — otherwise you may both go crazy!
One of these great activities is the Make Your Own Chewing Gum kit. So one evening, N was in one of those moods where he kept saying he was bored so we pulled out the chewing gum kit.
What is really nice about this kit is that instead of just being a nice activity to do with the kids, it is also a learning tool. In addition to the instructions that are in the box, there is also a sheet about how this type of gum, chicle, is connected to the rain forests. In fact, when you chew gum made from chicle, it helps protect the rain forest.
This educational material would be great, especially if you homeschool your children. You can download lesson plans, candy histories, and fun facts from the Glee Gum website.
So we got out all of the ingredients and began this process. The kit includes the chicle gum base, confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup, 2 flavor packets, and a black plastic pan. Now, it is important to remember that the chicle gum base is REALLY sticky when it melts so be sure to use the black pan when you are making the gum. Otherwise you may have a really hard time getting it out.
N was really excited and dove right in with melting the base, adding the ingredients, rolling the finished product, and adding the flavor. He really enjoys doing these things, especially when we do them as a family.
Unlike some of the kids craft or food kits, the instructions to this kit were actually pretty good. It can be frustrating when you are trying to do a project but the directions don’t make any sense!
I was amazed at how sticky the chicle base is. Be careful of where you get it, and I advise that the parents handle these parts. If you do happen to get the gum base someplace where it doesn’t belong you can use either melted butter (not margarine) or a commercial solvent to remove it (I am still having trouble getting it off of the knife in the picture!).
Overall, this was a fun kit to make and it helped keep the little one entertained for an evening! Plus, it is very reasonably priced. You can pick one up for only $10 on Amazon. It is also a great way to sneak in a little learning!
In addition to the Make Your Own Chewing Gum kit, there is also a Make Your Own Chocolate kit.
To make this review a little sweeter (Did you see what I did there?) I am also going to be giving away one of the Make Your Own Chewing Gum kits. The giveaway will run from 12:01 a.m. EST on February 18, 2013 through 11:59 p.m. EST on February 25, 2013. Winner must be from U.S. only.
