I have had a lifelong love of reading. In fact, even before I could actually read I would memorize the words to my books and then “read” the book to my parents.
As I got older, I would be able to finish a book in a day. I was constantly buying books. Whether it be bookstores, used bookstores, libraries, book fairs, or even garage sales — I searched them in hopes of finding my next read.
I still love reading although I don’t get through books quite as quickly as I used to. Now that E and Baby R are older I want to be able to pass this love of reading on to my boys. One of the ways I have been doing that is through building their book library.
Having a book library, I feel, gives kids a sense of pride in their books and make them excited about reading. I used to have a window seat in my room which I kept my books in. I would line up all of the books in a series or group them by topic. My parents always allowed me to read what I was interested in, so reading was fun. This is something that I want for my boys.
We don’t have any window seats in our current house, but that doesn’t mean I can’t create a cute place for the boys to keep their book libraries. In fact, I was able to make them one very inexpensively. Now we have a place to store all of the wonderful books that we collect.
Creating a File Crate Book Library
I started with four plastic, crate-style file crates. You can pick these up for about $4 each at Walmart. You will also need some of the longer-sized zip-ties (you can pick these up in the hardware department). Plus, you will need a pair of scissors.
You can use as many crates as you would like, but be sure to secure the crates on any sides that are touching. I suggest using two ties for each side you secure.
Once all of the crates are secure, it is time to begin filling it!
Get a Free Book With Kellogg’s and Scholastic
Now that you are getting ready to start filling you book library, you have to take advantage of the free Scholastic book offer from Kellogg’s. The great part about this offer is that you can get so many different Scholastic books just for buying the products that might already be on your grocery list!
My kids love Eggo® Waffles, Pop-Tarts®, and Fruit Loops®, but there are over 40 other products that are eligible for the free, full-length Scholastic book. Each person is also able to redeem codes and receive up to 30 books. There are also 80 titles of books ranging from beginning readers all the way up to teen/tween books. There are even titles in Spanish. With that sort of a selection, I’m sure you will be able to find a book your kids will love!
Redeeming your codes is easy too. You will need to create a Kellogg’s Family Rewards account in order to enter your codes, but this only takes a few minutes. After creating your account, all you have to do is enter your code. After that, you pick your book!
Since E is only 3 and Baby R is 1, I picked books from the Beginning Readers category. E loves Clifford the Big Red Dog and was really excited that he could get a new Clifford book. Additionally, E picked a Peppa Pig book that he thought he would like. Plus, shipping is free and the books will arrive within 6-8 weeks.
What is really nice is that even if you don’t want a book for yourself, you can also redeem your codes and donate the books to a school of your choice. Maybe your children are already grown, or maybe you don’t have children. This is still a great way to help out your community. Your donated book will ship directly to the school you choose in an envelope that says it was generously donated by your family.
There are also three ways to redeem your codes. You can use the Kellogg’s Family Reward app, you can scan it into your computer or enter it via text.
You can purchase the specially-marked Kellogg’s products at your local Walmart. Just look for the specially-marked boxes.
Don’t have a Walmart nearby? No worries! You can shop on Walmart.com and receive free books from purchases made between 7/21/2015 and 9/11/2015. Look for the Buy Now button at the Walmart website for a list of all eligible items. These redemptions are made via receipt scanning. You can check out the full details at the site above.
Just be sure to redeem your code for the free Scholastic book from Kellogg’s within 14 days of purchase and all codes must be entered by 3/31/2016.
Reading is a gift and is something to be shared whether it be with your own children or children in your community. Kellogg’s is just making it much easier!
