Part 1: Should or shouldn’t you buy it? My trip to the dollar store
When I need to get out of the house, I often find myself ending up at the dollar store just seeing what there is to see. Needless to say, I have become somewhat of a dollar store “expert.” There are some great deals that you can find, but there are also some things that you should just steer clear of.
This is the first part of a two part series that explores what you should and what you shouldn’t buy at the dollar store!
MAYBE. There aren’t as many yards in these rolls as there are in the ones that you get at Walmart or Target, but if you only need a small amount, these are great!
BUY! You can actually get some pretty good deals on kitchen gadgets such as potato peelers, can openers, and teaspoons.
BUY! I love these balloons! They are great quality and last a long time. Actually, I bought 10 of these for my son’s birthday party and a month later they are still floating!
BUY! These are usually about $1 at the grocery store, and if you stack these prices with manufacturer coupons it is a good deal.
MAYBE. These probably aren’t as high quality as some, but for washing the car or for dusting they aren’t bad.
BUY! Not a bad deal, getting two for a $1 is probably better than you could do at Target.
BUY! For messy jobs, its much better to pay only $1 for something that you will just throw away.
BUY! If you use a manufacturer coupon this soap can be pretty cheap or even free!
BUY! This is a much better deal than Target or Walmart.
SKIP. These are thin and can tear easily.
SKIP. Canned meat at the Dollar Store? This seems like a no brainer!
BUY. If you need a plastic shower curtain you can’t beat the price!
SKIP.There are some decent brands, but if it isn’t a name brand I would stay away. Some of these off brand ones just seemed to make my hair a mess.
BUY! BUY! BUY! Most people think that a pregnancy test from the dollar store wouldn’t be any good, but these are actually some of the most sensitive tests I have ever taken. It was actually the first test that detected I was pregnant with my son, 6 days before my missed period!
BUY! This makes it possible to get clean without giving your wallet a bath too!
SKIP. This is in the same category as the hand towels.
MAYBE. This shampoo and conditioner is pretty basic but it works.
BUY! I have actually had pretty good luck with the LA Looks makeup. They also carry Maybelline which you can get free when there are manufacturer coupons.
SKIP. Unless you have a burning desire to lose some skin in addition to the hair.
SKIP. These are flimsy and won’t get the job done. Spend the extra $0.50 and buy some at the drug store.
BUY! There are some name brands which are good, but I would stay away from anything that isn’t a name brand.
BUY! There are some good snack foods. My husband would say that the Fiddle Faddle is definitely a go!
SKIP. Baby bottles are something you really should spend the extra money on.
BUY! My son loves these spoons. They are the perfect size for little mouths, and if you lose one you don’t feel bad!
MAYBE. These weren’t labeled BPA free so it makes me a little wary.
MAYBE. I am guessing these probably aren’t very sturdy, but they will at least hold things.
SKIP. If you are in need of a table cloth for your dining room table this is not the one.
MAYBE. These are good for just holding hair while it is drying but they are sort of rough on the scalp.
SKIP. I didn’t know it was possible to mess up bobby pins, however the rubber tips on these come off super easily and will gauge your scalp.
BUY! These are great for art projects or even for a fish tank, but they are REALLY expensive at the pet stores or the craft stores.
BUY! These are also great for art projects.
SKIP. A digital watch from the dollar store? Need I say more?

Great article. I too, love the dollar store. I highly recommend the frames from there also. I buy the wooded ones and spray paint them black! Coloring books are a great but there also.
This is awesome – I didnt realize the Dollar Stores had so much great STUFF! I havent been in one in ages – I am gonna have to go stock up on cleaning stuff. I am spending WAY too much other places.
