I love taking the boys to the local farm to get fresh apples. There is just something about fruit straight from the farm that seems to make it taste better. Not to mention that the boys love eating the apples.
There are only so many apple slices that you can eat before it gets old though. This year I decided to do something a little different and used some of the apples to make homemade applesauce. It turned out delicious!
Making Homemade Applesauce
This recipe will make three servings, but you can easily double or triple the recipe in order to make larger quantities.
You will need a few ingredients to get started, including:
- 3 apples
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/3 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp of sugar
- Optional: nutmeg
Begin by peeling the apples, then chop them and place them in a blender. Add water, cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg.
If you are in a hurry, you can serve the applesauce cold, right out of the blender. Another option is to warm it in a saucepan on low heat for approximately 15 minutes, stirring in extra sugar and cinnamon for flavor.
What is great about this applesauce is that not only can you serve it alone, but you can also use it in bread, muffins, latkes, and even donuts. Applesauce can even take the place of oil in a lot of baked goods, making them healthier and more natural.
Since this is all-natural applesauce with no preservatives, you will want to store it in a sealed container and consume it within four days. However, it tastes so good that I doubt it will even last that long! Another option is to portion out the applesauce into small containers and freeze it for a later date.
Whether you are purchasing apples from the farm, farmers’ market, or picking them at the orchard yourself, making homemade applesauce is a delicious option for all of those apples you have on hand!
