They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet it is the one that we most often neglect. Whether it is because we are in too much of a hurry, or have other things on our minds, we don’t start the day with breakfast.
One of the times that we are most likely to skip breakfast is during major life events. These events could be things like a wedding, a new baby, or even the death of a loved one.
I have talked openly about the death of my husband five months ago. The night before the funeral, my sister’s boyfriend and his family brought over a wonderful breakfast basket for us to have the next morning. They knew that not only would we be busy that morning, but also that we needed to eat even though we were grieving.
These baskets don’t have to just be for sad occasions, but even life events such as someone having a baby would be ideal for one of these breakfast baskets. Anyone who has kids knows what a challenge a new baby can be, especially if you have other children. Giving a breakfast basket not only gives the new parents something to stock their pantry with, but it is also a gentle reminder for them to take care of themselves too.
Creating a breakfast basket is pretty easy too. It’s especially easy when you shop at Walmart, which is pretty much a one-stop-shop for everything you will need.
I broke the basket down into three categories: things to eat, things to drink, and fruit.
For things to eat, I included some big breakfast essentials such as pancake mix and syrup. I also added things like cereal bars and oatmeal. These are perfect for grab-and-go breakfasts. I also included some bread but you could also include things like Lender’s Bagels.
No breakfast is complete without fruit. I added a variety of fresh fruit such as apples, clementines, and bananas.
Of course, having something to wash your breakfast down with is important. This is why I included coffee, creamer, and most importantly milk, in the basket.
Milk is naturally nutrient rich while providing nine essential nutrients and includes eight grams of high-quality protein per 8 ounce serving.
The sad truth is that while milk can help power everyday activities, 46 million Americans (including 12 million children) aren’t getting basic staples such as milk. Milk is one of the most requested food bank items, but one of the least donated. This means that millions of Americans are missing out on essential nutrients.
Childhood should be filled with playing, learning and growing. But for many children who face hunger, even basic staples like milk – and the nutrients that help power childhood activities – are missing. Now, you can help feed a childhood – by purchasing 1 or more of these products (milk, Lender’s Bagels, or Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions), you are helping Feeding America provide nutrient- rich milk to kids and families in need. Join Feeding America in the Great American Milk Drive to help deliver highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk to hungry children and families who need it most. More than 14 million servings of milk have been delivered to food banks through this first-of-its-kind initiative.
