All of a sudden it seemed as if my magazines had gotten out of control. I get quite a few subscriptions (that I got for free) and often I don’t have time to read them right away. Since a lot of these magazines focus on either DIY projects, home organization, or digital photography nothing is time sensitive, and often I like having the magazines for inspiration. What I didn’t like though was the fact that all of these magazines were stacked in a drawer of my desk and were a mess.
Magazine storage bins are expensive though. To get a plastic one at Staples costs $10 for one. I figured that there had to be a better (and less expensive way) to make these organizers. It was then that I realized that the USPS Flat Rate boxes that I had sitting in my laundry room would be PERFECT for this.
All you will need is:
- Several Medium Flat Rate boxes. The boxes are free at the post office or on the Postal Service’s website.
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Box Cutter
I began by putting the box together, but leaving the top flaps unsecured. I then drew a diagonal line from the top corner about 2/3 of the way down. This is where you will cut.
You will do this to both sides of the box. Then all you need to do is cut straight across to connect the cuts on each side.
This whole process will take less than 5 minutes and once you are done you have a great place to store magazines.
If you don’t like the fact that you can tell that this was once a Flat Rate box you can always cover the organizer with fabric or wrapping paper. I store my magazines in my laundry room so they need to be functional, not pretty.
