Last year, my grandmother had a stroke. A bad one. It was so bad, in fact, that we were told to prepare for the worst. Miraculously, she pulled through but the stroke did leave some physical difficulties which required her to spend several months in a rehabilitation facility.
Now, a year later she is back home but I saw firsthand how hard the road to recovery can be — especially for the elderly.
It can be even harder when you don’t feel good about yourself.
Luckily, my grandmother had a strong family support system which supported her on her road to recovery, but there are others who aren’t so lucky. Sadly, the ones who do not have such a support system don’t recover as quickly. Words can’t begin to describe how sad this is.
It is because of this that I decided to make some care baskets to deliver to the rehabilitation facility for patients without families or even for families who could use a little extra support. This would also be perfect for delivering to nursing home patients.
Bath & Body Products
Feeling good about yourself is an important part of healing. In oder to help boost patients’ self-esteem, I gathered several bath and body products for the basket such as body lotion, hand and lip balm, and a body scrubber. These products are all meant to make patients feel better about themselves, and therefore set them on the road to recovery faster.
Boredom Busters
I remember my grandmother complaining about how boring it was at the rehabilitation facility. Thankfully, she had my grandfather who stayed with her almost all day, everyday. Once again, not all patients are so lucky.
I put together a few items that are meant to help pass the time and ease the boredom. Some of the items included adult coloring books, crayons or colored pencils, paperbacks, or even magazines. All of these items are meant to not only relieve some of the boredom as well as keep the patients minds’ stimulated.
Self-Confidence Boosters
