Create a New Holiday Tradition with Hallmark Ornaments

Picking a special Christmas ornament has been a tradition in my family since I was young. Each year we would go to the mall and there my sister and I would get to choose an ornament that we loved and has special meaning. 

This tradition was so special to me that when Mike and I got married I knew that it was something that I wanted to continue with N and eventually with my own children. We have continued this tradition with the boys and it has now become something that they too love and look forward to each year. 

As much as my kids love this tradition, the truth is that not everyone lives near a mall or a Hallmark store. This is why it is so great that you can now purchase Hallmark Ornaments at your local Walmart. It’s not just a few ornaments either. In addition to the resin figures, Holiday Barbie, deco figurines, and even classic movies, there are also 16 ornaments exclusive to Walmart.

Another problem is that over the years, sometimes it gets hard to keep track of which ornaments were bought in what year and why. In order to really preserve the memories of picking ornaments each year, I decided to make a scrapbook page every year which not only has a picture of the ornament the boys chose, but also a little journal section to record why they chose that ornament.

This way, years from now I can look back at all of the ornaments the boys have chosen and why. This will be especially nice once they are grown and take their Christmas ornaments to their own Christmas tress ones day and I won’t have a physical reminder anymore.

Creating a Holiday Ornament Scrapbook Page Keepsake

I really enjoy making digital scrapbook pages. It is nice because you can purchase kits online (that are pretty inexpensive!) that will come with digital papers, elements, and even letters which you can arrange using a program such as Photoshop or even PicMonkey. With two small children around, I have found I don’t have the time (or the space) to do a traditional scrapbook page with all of the stickers, papers, and elements and do a bit of a hybrid.

For this page I used a Christmas-themed digital scrapbook kit. I created a 4×6 space which is where I would place the picture (I usually print the pictures at the store) as well as a journaling area, title, and the year. After I designed the scrapbook page the way that I wanted, I was able to simply take it to the local print store and have it printed out. If you take it to be printed make sure that you have the print store print it in full color on a heavy-weight card stock. I had three pages printed so that I could make one for each of the boys.

This year, the boys are really into super heroes. When we found Avenger Hallmark Ornaments at Walmart they were really excited. Little E wanted Captain American and Baby R wanted Ironman. Since neither one of them can write, I had them tell me why they picked the ornaments that they did and I wrote it in the journaling section of the scrapbook page.

I then gave the boys several packs of holiday-themed stickers and allowed them to decorate the scrapbook pages in whatever way they wanted.

After they were done decorating the pages it was time to add the picture to the page. I actually had the pictures printed out, but if you are good at digital scrapbooking you can add the picture to the page in your editing software and so that it will just print it out with the page.

In this case, however, since I printed the pictures separately I had the boys use a glue stick and attach the pictures to the page.

Once the scrapbook page was finished I ran it through my laminating machine in order to protect it from any future spills, dirt, or water. If you don’t have a laminating machine, don’t worry, this step is not a necessity, just something nice. Now I can either put the finished page in another scrapbook album sleeve or just hole punch it and put it in a binder. Either way, I will have a beautiful reminder of the ornaments (and the reason they picked them) for years and years to come. I know it is something that I will treasure!

You can pick up the Hallmark Ornaments at you local Walmart either in the Christmas decoration section or at the front of the store. Even though we buy them for our own Christmas tree, they also make wonderful teacher, hostess, or family gifts. Pair them with one of the Hallmark cards found at Walmart and you will have a gift they will never forget!
