Nothing says “summer” like Coca-Cola. I’m not sure what it is, but a cold Coke on a hot day is so refreshing. In fact, my dad for years told the story that back when he was in grade school and middle school, as a reward for having a good report card at the end of the school year, my grandparents would buy him a 12-pack of Coca-Cola which he would ration all summer.
Here in Pennsylvania, the weather has gotten warmer and we are just starting into the summer season. Even though it has been many years since my father got those Cokes for having a good report card, Coke still somehow always manages to signal the beginning of summer.
There are so many things that we have planned including the usual trips to the amusement park, the zoo, as well as family road trips. Each of these are very different occasions, but there is one thing that is the same. Whenever I am packing our lunches, snacks, or just some beverages I always turn to Coke.
Sharing a Coke means sharing memories with the people I love.
Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Tray Tutorial
One of the things my family loves to do is to sit out on our back patio in the evening and watch the kids play on the swing set. It’s just so relaxing, not to mention it is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the kids. However, all of that Coca-Cola drinking means that we have a lot of left over bottles. After recycling the bottles, and redeeming the My Coke Rewards points under the caps, what do you do with the leftover caps?
Make a super-cute serving tray of course!
After making this tray, you will have not only a fabulous conversation piece, but also a handy device for serving your favorite summer drinks on. Plus, it is not that difficult to make.
Here is what you will need:
- Approximately 63 Coca-Cola bottle caps
- One wooden, unpainted serving tray
- Hot glue
- Clear, epoxy resin
I love being able to upcycle things that might otherwise be thrown away. That is the case with these Coke bottle caps. I have been setting the caps aside for a while now in hopes that I would be inspired to create that perfect project. Needless to say, I had quite a few caps.
Spray paint the tray to whatever color you would like it to be. Pay attention to the bottom the tray and the insides of the handles. You will want to make sure that all of the surfaces are covered.
After the paint dries, it is time to start working with the bottle caps. If you want to create a design, it is probably best to lay out the caps on the tray ahead of time to make sure that there is room and that you will like the design you create. I decided to make a “V” shape in the center of the tray.
Before gluing the bottle caps to the bottom of the tray, put a line of hot glue or some sort of sealant around the edges of the tray which connect to the sides. You don’t want the resin to leak through the sides (this is a mistake I initially made).
Then, you want to use hot glue to attach the caps to the bottom of the tray. After the caps are glued to the tray, it is time to mix the resin. You will need a lot of resin, so you will want to buy a fairly good-sized bottle. I am partial to Clear Castin’ Epoxy Resin, but you can use whatever brand you would like.
Pour the resin over the bottle caps, and allow to dry. Once it is dried, it will appear glassy. Until it is fully cured, however, the surface will be tacky and you will want to avoid touching it.
Once it is cured, you can use it to serve all of your favorite Coca-Cola drinks at your next get together of family and friends.
