VinylDecal4I am loving the new vinyl wall decal trend. It’s not just words or sayings either. The images and design decals are also beautiful. The decals are particularly appealing to me because, well, I’m not particularly adept at stenciling on the wall in paint — not to mention where do you get a stencil that large that says what you want?

This is why these vinyl decals are so great. Plus, if you decide to move, or repaint a room it is easy to remove the decal.

Recently, I was introduced to the decal company, Divine Walls. Their mission is to create beautiful and meaningful decorations for the home, office, or vehicle based on or inspired by the Word of God.

There are so many themes to choose from too. Divine Walls has a number of different themes including kitchen, children and nursery, love and marriage, family, holiday, inspirational and more. In addition, if you don’t see the design you want there is a custom design option. With this option, you can choose not only the exact wording you want, but also the decal’s font and also the color.

VinylDecal1I chose the “Choose ye this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” decal which was derived from Joshua 24:15.

However, it can sometimes be difficult to get that perfect application that you are looking for. This is why I have developed these 5 tips for applying vinyl wall decals.

Assess your wall material. It is much easier to apply a vinyl wall decal to a smooth wall as opposed to a textured plaster wall. Don’t let this discourage you though! Some companies, including Divine Walls, give you the option to order a version of the decals that work better on textured walls. If you don’t see the option on a company’s website, just call their customer service member and ask.

VinylDecal2Use a glue stick. Sometimes just one letter is a problem. It might be that just one of the ends of a script letter won’t stay down, or another delicate piece isn’t sticking well. An easy solution for this is using a simple glue stick. Just put a little bit of glue on the back of the letters and restick them.

This is the glue stick I used and it worked really, really well.

VinylDecal3Make letters more flexible using a hair dryer. If your problem is slightly more difficult, you might want to consider using a hair dryer. Nothing exciting, the same one that you have in your bathroom. Don’t get the vinyl so hot that it melts, just so that it gets flexible. When the vinyl is fexible, it is easier to get the vinyl to conform to the wall’s ridges and this stick better.

Even an inexpensive one such as this one from Amazon will work really well.

Be sure to clean the wall. Just as any sticker won’t stick well to a dirty surface, neither will a decal stick to a dirty surface. This includes dust, pet hair, and other dirt that might not be readily noticeable. Clean the wall with either rubbing alcohol or another cleaning solution. Make sure the wall has completely dried before attempting to apply the decal though.

A credit, debit, or gift card will be your best friend when applying a vinyl decal. You should start by removing the backing to the vinyl and sticking the decal to the wall. Rub firmly over the surface of the decal. Go over the area several times with the card to make sure that the vinyl is applied firmly. Pay extra attention to any intricate or small pieces. Once you are sure you have gone over all the parts of the decal, slowly pull the paper away from the vinyl at a downward angle. Once the paper has been removed, rub over the letters one more time to make sure they stay on the wall.
