Home Care Services Help Care For You or a Loved One During Tough Times
The past year has been a challenging one health-wise for my grandmother. She is 92 years old (although you would never guess it if you met her) and although she is in pretty good health overall, after a stay in the hospital for a minor surgery she ended up contracting Clostridium difficile (C. diff).
If you aren’t familiar with C. diff, it is a particularly nasty bacterial infection that attacks the intestines causing diarrhea . She though she had a bout of the stomach flu, but when it wasn’t getting better they ended up doing a culture which revealed what it really was. This began several months of hospitalizations, antibiotics, and of course, worry. It’s scary when you are dealing with a 92-year-old fighting a nasty disease.
During these months, when my grandmother wasn’t in the hospital, she was at home. However, it was really hard for her and my grandfather to keep up. My grandmother was so completely wiped out, so she spent most of her time either in bed or on the couch. That left my 93-year-old grandfather to cook, clean, and take care of the shopping. Our family helped out as much as we could, but between our own families and jobs it was a stretch. Not to mention I was 7 months pregnant and told not to be around someone with C. diff, so I was no help.
We knew that my grandparents couldn’t handle all of this on their own, but hiring someone seemed risky. Who can you really trust? We have all heard the stories about the person who is supposed to be caring for someone instead stealing money from and abusing the person. We didn’t want just anyone at my grandparents’ house. This is where companies such as Griswold Home Care are invaluable.
Founded in 1982 by the wife of a Presbyterian minister, Griswold Home Care is a service that assists those in need to continue living and celebrating life from the comfort of their own home. Home care is a model of care that includes both professional and informal support networks that include family, neighbors, and friends.
As a part of these home care services, caregivers can come to your house and help out with day to day tasks (such as cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping), personal care (such as bathing, dressing, and toileting), and also companionship (ensure transportation to social activities, errands, and shopping trips).
What’s also great is that you can use home care services for variable amounts of time. Some people use them for long periods of time, such as if the person has had a stroke and will need continual care, or even small amounts of time such as recovering after a surgery, fall, or in my grandmother’s case, an illness.
To learn more about the kinds of home care services Griswold offers, learn about how the services work, or to find a location near you, check out the Griswold website.
Do you know someone who might be going through a tough time right now? I have the opportunity to give away a $25 gift card for Walmart to help out with buying groceries. I would love to see someone use this to bless someone in their life that may be recovering from an accident or illness, who might be having trouble paying their bills, or even to bring dinner to a senior citizen who may be lonely. This giveaway is sponsored by Griswold Home Care and will run through 11:59 p.m. on July 31, 2014. Just enter through the form below! Good luck!
If I win, I will send this gift card to my grandparents. They did a lot for me when I was a teenager. I live too far to help them out physically now, but I try to send them money as often as I can. They are the type who never ask for help but they will skip medications or meals to save money.
