I decided to write this series because as a stay at home mom I am always looking for ways to both make and save money. I don’t really have the time to start my own business or the money to go into much overhead. So in order to supplement some of my husband’s income I look for ways to make money off of things I already have.
One of these things is through consignment sales. Consignment sales are a great way to get rid of some of the clothes that your children may have outgrown, or equipment that they don’t use anymore.
My first experience with consignment sales was last year when I was pregnant with my son. When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to buy all new clothes and equipment…that was until I saw the prices of some of the equipment. We would go broke paying $100 for an Exersaucer, $80 for a bouncer, or even $20 for an outfit that the baby would only wear a few times. It was then that I discovered the world of consignment sales and the fact that not only could I get great deals, but also make money!
The first sale I ever went to was a Just Between Friends sale near the Pittsburgh Airport. I was able to get some great gear for the baby’s pending arrival including a bouncy, Exersaucer, Baby Bjorn, Thomas the Trains (for future use!), crib wedge, and more. Unfortunately, this sale was a little far from where I live, which is to the East of Pittsburgh. So, in the fall I did some research and found that there were actually a lot of local sales too.
By this time my son had outgrown some of his newborn and 3 month clothes so I registered to consign at three different sales. After consigning you have to prepare your merchandise, but the nice thing about consignment sales is that you can pick your own prices. It also gives you a much larger audience than you might get at a garage sale, and the people at the consignment sales are specifically looking for baby and children’s things!
I ended up selling most of the items that I consigned at these sales, and the best part was that the sales have such amazing deals I was able to get my son a bunch of new things. Getting rid of things that my son has outgrown and getting some great new things in return — that sounds like a win-win situation to me!
