When E was born, I was so concerned about doing things “right”. Of course, as a new mom there were some things that I didn’t do right, but one things that I was sure to get right was to make sure that we practiced safe sleep.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is still one of those somewhat mysterious conditions that terrifies new parents. However, there have been studies that show practicing safe sleep reduces the chances of SIDS. Some of these safe strategies are:
- Putting babies on their back to sleep
- Not overheating the baby
- Using a pacifier
- Place the bed in an area that is smoke free
- Not placing babies to sleep on adult beds, chairs, sofas, waterbeds, pillows, or cushions
- Keeping the crib free of all loose blankets, stuffed animals, pillows, and bumpers
- Having baby sleep alone in his/her crib
In order to continue to promote safe sleep from the moment a baby is born, more than 1,000 hospital nurseries in all 50 states and Canada are using the HALO SleepSack Swaddle instead of blankets. Leading health organizations agree that modeling proper baby care in the hospital is the single biggest influence on how parents care for their baby at home.
I really wish that this initiative had been around when I had E. Luckily, I had come across HALO on my own before E was born and had several of the swaddles on hand. These were perfect when E arrived, because he was one of those babies that had trouble sleeping without being swaddled. The SleepSacks were lifesavers because they allowed E to sleep peacefully and gave me the peace of mind that he wasn’t going to suffocate on loose blankets.
HALO is giving me the opportunity to give away a SleepSack Swaddle to one lucky reader. Just enter through the form below. The giveaway runs through 11:59 p.m. EST on October 21, 2013. To make the giveaway even better, through the month of October, HALO will donate $1 to SIDS Awareness for every new Facebook “like” they receive!
