I have been meaning to write this post forever, but hey, life happens! 🙂 Several months ago, E fell while he was climbing and hit his head on our sliding door resulting in six stitches in his forehead. Unfortunately, during the night he rubbed his head on the bumpers in his crib resulting in several blood spots on the bedding. I really like this bedding set and I didn’t want the blood to leave stains, especially because the blood was on a light colored portion (of course). Then I remembered this great way to remove blood.
I actually learned this trick shortly before I had knee surgery. As they were doing the pre-op bloodwork I got blood on my shirt. The technician then taught me this. All you need is a rag and some hydrogen peroxide (make sure you are using the 1% kind).
First and foremost, DO NOT PUT THE FABRIC WITH THE BLOOD IN THE WASHER OR DRYER. I cannot stress this enough. If you put it in the dryer then the stain will set and it will be VERY difficult to get the stain out, if not impossible.
What you want to do first is test a small part of the fabric to make sure that the peroxide won’t damage the color on the fabric. Then pour the peroxide into the lid of the bottle and pour a little bit directly onto the blood. When the blood begins to bubble use the rag to gently wipe the bubbled up blood off.
Depending on how much blood there is, will depend on how many coats of peroxide you will need to use. Luckily, E didn’t get too much blood on the bumper, so it only took three coats of peroxide. It can be tedious, but just keep adding coats until you have removed all the blood.
After you have done all of the coats and removed all of the blood, just throw the fabric in the washer and dryer. It should come out looking good as new!
Have you ever tried this method of removing blood from fabrics?
