I never thought much about recycling until my boys were born. Sure, I put my cans and bottles into our recycling bin, but I wasn’t really aware of how much other stuff around the house should be recycled. When I saw their sweet faces for the first time, I wanted to do everything I could to make sure the planet was as healthy for them as it was for me.
I began exploring ways that I can make changes around my home to make it more efficient and recycling-friendly. In doing so, I’ve come up with a list of five household materials that can, and should, be recycled.
Ink Cartridges
They are something we don’t think much about, but almost everyone uses — ink cartridges. These cartridges contain toxic materials that should not be put in the trash. Many major retailers will recycle these cartridges and you can even mail them back to the manufacturer.
Medications
In the past, people have just flushed unused medications down the toilet. This has led to an increase in traces of medication found in the water system. Instead, you should take advantage of medication take-back days often held at community centers and offices. You can even purchase one of the medication return kids at your local pharmacy.
Batteries
There are toxic materials in not only rechargeable batteries but also in household batteries. Many post offices, home improvement stores, and even libraries recycle old batteries.
Motor Oil
You should never just pour motor oil into the ground as it can leach into the ground water and eventually make it into rivers and streams. It is actually very easy to recycle motor oil though. All you have to do is take your used motor oil to one of Walmart’s Auto Care Centers. Just bring in the used oil and Walmart takes care of the rest.
Whether you change your own oil, or have it done at the Walmart Auto Care Center, I’ve always been a fan of Mobil 1™. Not only is the Extended Performance synthetic oil good for 15,000 miles, but right now, through April 30, it is also beneficial to purchase both Mobil 1™ oil or recycle your used oil at a Walmart Auto Care Center. When you purchase 5 quarts of Mobil 1™ in Walmart or have a Mobil 1™ oil change at the Auto Care Center you can be entered for a chance to win a Chevy Equinox.
As a bonus, when you purchase 5 quarts of synthetic oil or a Mobil 1™ synthetic oil change at the Auto Care Center, you will be eligible to receive a $10 Select Certificate laid on a future Mobil 1™ purchase at Walmart.
One you have made the qualifying Mobil 1™ purchase or recycled any used oil at Walmart, you can enter to win the Chevy Equinox or receive the $10 Select Certificate at earthdaydriveaway.com. (Limit 2 entries in the sweepstakes per customer. 1 entry for purchase and 1 for recycling.) Your receipt is required to receive the $10 Walmart Select Certificate.
You can find out more about Walmart Auto Care’s motor oil recycling program, or even check out the Oil Selector Tool, at the Walmart website.
In addition, you can find the Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oil in the auto care department of your local Walmart.
