It was an absolutely freezing night. One of those nights where the temperatures had dipped into the single digits. Instead of staying in and staying warm, myself and four of my mommy friends had gotten babysitters and had planned a night out.
Of course the holidays are thought of as the most magical time of the year, so us ladies decided to visit the Winter Flower Show and Light Garden at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. This exhibit is designed around the theme “Snow Day at Phipps” but with topiary reindeer, penguins, and bears, I can guarantee this is the most whimsical snow day you’ll ever have.
As you wind through the changing exhibit rooms, not only are you treated to beautiful displays of plants and flowers but also amazing glasswork. One of my favorite pieces happened to be the light hanging in the desert room.
That isn’t the only breathtaking glass sculpture, however. There are all sorts of unique glass sculptures tucked among the flowers and lights as well as tranquil fountains and waterfalls.
The Broderie Room was also beautifully decorated in poinsettia of different colors as well as moon and stars.
There are countless decorated Christmas trees throughout the conservatory. These are all decorated in different themes and colors and are simply stunning.
Speaking of stunning, the Winter Light Garden really steals the show. Located in the Outdoor and Discovery Gardens, this exhibit features luminous orbs, tunnels of lights, trees, and thousands of twinkling lights.
Two days before we went, we had gotten a couple of inches of snow which, despite the cold temperature, made the outdoor light show look even more amazing. It was if the orbs were just floating on the snow and tubes of light emerged from snow-covered ground.
Honestly, it was all breathtaking.
Of course for the kids, one of the highlights is the garden railroad. This railroad, designed for Pittsburgh’s bicentennial, celebrates two centuries of our city’s greatest achievements. Being a Latrobe resident I love that Mister Rogers Neighborhood of Make Believe was also featured. There were also interactive scenes such as the incline, Ferris Wheel, and Three Rivers Stadium.
If you are looking for an idea mom’s night out, date night, or light display with the kids, this is something I highly recommend. The Winter Flower Show and Light Garden runs through January 8, followed by the Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show starting January 14. For tickets, or more information, visit the Phipps Conservatory website.
I received complimentary tickets in exchange for this post, however, all thoughts and opinions were my own.
